More than 100,000 people every year come from far and wide to experience the Tongariro Crossing.
This legendary track passes over varied and spectacular volcanic terrain. In the presence of active volcanoes, you'll experience a cold mountain spring, lava flows, an active crater, steam vents, natural hot springs and emerald-coloured lakes. See the moonscape craters of Ruapehu, Ngaruhoe and Tongariro, lush native forest, lava formations, glaciers, crystal clear rivers and other magnificent views.
The Tongariro Crossing takes 7 to 8 hours covering a distance of 17kms one way, or you can stay overnight at the Mangatepopo Hut. (A small charge applies and can be paid at any Department of Conservation office.)

| Mount Tongariro |
Smell the sulphur of the active Red Crater and take challenging side trips to the summits of both Mount Ngauruhoe (1967 metres above sea level) and Mount Tongariro (2287 metres). See cascading waterfalls, alpine meadows, three water-filled explosion craters called the Emerald Lakes and an old volcanic vent called Blue Lake.
The Tongariro crossing is an extending full-day tramp into a volcanic desert environment and it travels over steep and difficult terrain. It is important to have the appropriate clothing, equipment and level of fitness.
Car Ferrying Service
As this walk begins and ends at different points, transport arrangements must be made. In addition, it is not secure to leave cars at the track ends.
We offer our guests and other travellers transport (a Car Ferrying service) to and from the Tongariro Crossing.
We will take you to the start of the track (around a 15 minute drive from our park) at whatever time you wish and bring your vehicle back to camp where it is safe and secure. We will then pick you up from the end of the track (also a 15 minute drive) and transport you back to camp - again, at the time that suits you.
